This is a post from a couple of years ago, but I think it bears repeating. The inspiration was from the myriad of conversations with the under 25 set. I'm currently working on another for the over 60 set. Are we ever happy with our bodies, our outfits?

Trust me, it's short enough.

"I don't know, I'm already short, so I need my dresses to be shorter or it looks weird."

It doesn't look weird.

"Don't you think it looks kind of conservative?"

No, it has a plunging neckline down to your navel.  No one will make it past your cleavage to notice that your hemline is three inches instead of two inches below your ass."

Smiles, acknowledging the truth in this statement, but still, "I don't know, I just think it would look better if it were shorter."

It's totally short enough.

(Looks at me like I'm insane) "I don't know, I just think it should be shorter.  Don't you think it should be shorter?" (scrunches dress upwards)

I don't know, it's already really tight. And, it's a good four inches above your knees. And backless.

"I know, but I just wish it were shorter."

It's sexy.  Any shorter and you'd be giving it all away.

(Doesn't believe me).

It's short enough.

"I don't know, it's kind of awkward. My legs would look better if it were shorter."

You're  5'10 and you're 19 years old. Your legs look A-mazing and you don't even have to work out. It's not going to get any better than this.

"Really?"

Yes, truly.

"Are you sure?"

Positive.

Scrunches dress to make it shorter, looks over shoulder into mirror to check the view from behind.

It's short enough.

"I don't know, are you sure?"

Yeah, it looks great on you - the color looks great with your skin tone.  And it's sexy without being slutty  Seriously, it's perfect.

Furrows brow, "I don't know, I just think it should be shorter."

Where are you going?

"To an after hours."

You're buying a body-con dress to wear to a frat house at 2 in the morning?

"Yes."

It's short enough.

I get it, short dresses are in, I'm not against them, I'd even say I am "Pro" short dress. They're fun and showing a lot of leg can be sexy. Showing your vagina when you sit down, no. Neither is your bare ass touching the bar stool, or chair in a restaurant, because your dress is so short it rides up when you sit down. That's just plain gross, and a bit unsanitary.

Here's the point. If you're under 25 and you're trying on body-con dresses, that inch or two you're obsessing about, that you think will make all the difference in the world, it doesn't matter. Really, if you're any age trying on a body-con dress it doesn't matter (it just gets a little less appropriate as you get older).

I'm not saying that hemlines don't matter. Definitely certain hemlines are more complimentary to certain figures. But that space from just below your ass, to three inches longer? Doesn't matter. You will not look taller or skinnier or fatter or shorter or less or more attractive because of an inch or two of difference in an already short hemline.

Leave a little to the imagination. A guy is not going to pass you by because your dress was an inch too long. He might pass you by if your dress is so short he thinks you're a crazy person and you forgot to wear your pants. OR, he may think, She's crazy! She forgot to wear her pants! That's my kind of girl! But is that really your kind of guy?  Yes, yes, for some of you this may be right up your alley. But if you're just looking for a quick hook up, or a psycho, why waste the money on a new dress? I mean really, the same guy who's into you because you forgot to wear your pants will still be into you with that dress that you think is two inches too long, or sweats and a t-shirt for that matter.

Which brings us back to the original point: If you're wearing a body-con dress, we can already basically see your body. It shows off your curves, it's feminine, it's already short. It's short enough.
